Some exciting news on the HTC VR front. Applications are now open, for developers to submit their VR projects for consideration, and receive a developer edition unit to develop on.
HTC are choosing to release their developer kits free of charge to developers, and at regular intervals after the selection process, which will begin this spring and through summer. The developer kit seems generous especially with it being at zero cost. According to the SteamVR website, it will include the following:
The VR headset has a 1080x1200 pixels screen in front of each eye with a refresh rate of 90fps. An audio jack is included to plug in your own headphones.
Two VR game controllers (one for each hand) are included allowing you to use virtual objects and interact with the virtual word. The position of each controller is also tracked in space by the base stations.
Two base stations track your physical location (in spaces up to 15x15 feet) A gyrosensor, accelerometer, and laser position sensor combine to precisely track the rotation of your head on both axes to an accuracy of 1/10th of a degree.
It does seems like they are aiming to make their kit as widely available as possible, and are shifting their focus now to content creation. It should be interesting to see if this move pays off, come their launch later this year.
